RIVERLAND TERRACE NEIGHBORHOOD ASSOCIATION

June 18, 2007

City of Charleston
Department of Traffic and Transportation
180 Lockwood Drive Extension
Charleston SC 29403

Attention: Hernan Pena

Mr. Pena:

Riverland Terrace has a severe problem with speeders. This has been identified as the number one problem affecting our livability. The Riverland Terrance Neighborhood Association (RTNA) established a task force to address possible solutions.  These solutions were voted on by our members.

One solution we identified was having the incoming traffic light at the northern lane of Maybank Highway & Wappoo Drive, which directs traffic coming into our neighborhood from Maybank, to default to red. Currently, it stays green, unless there is traffic on Woodland Shores, at which time it turns red.

The Riverland Terrance Garden Club members maintain the medians at this intersection. The members who work on these medians are not safe because cars pass by at speeds of 40 MPH or more. Yet, the appearance of our neighborhood on Maybank is so important, that they are willing to take this risk.

We are asking you to change this traffic light so that it is always red until a car is present to come into the neighborhood.  This stop would ensure a relatively slow speed as vehicles pass this median.  We are hoping that it will also help reduce the speed of cars on Wappoo Drive.  Mary Mason, Safety Committee Chairperson, spoke with Troy Mitchell regarding this issue of the traffic light and was assured that the City would help us in any way possible, to make our neighborhood safer

Another problem identified by this task force was the lack of speed limit signs on our streets.

It would be a great benefit to our neighborhood if the City could post the 25 MPH speed limit on its right of ways.  We have asked for the county’s assistance with this also.

Thank you for your assistance with this matter. We appreciate any and all help you can give us.

Sincerely,

John Meffert, Co-President
Judy Pardue, Co-President
